The Santa Fe Film Festival 2017 Winter Fundraiser presents: Baraka

With images of 24 countries from six continents, shot over the course of 30 months, Ron Fricke and Mark Magidson’s film, featuring music by Michael Stearns, combines startling 70mm footage of the best and worst our world has to offer, “a guided meditation on humanity,” according to Fricke.

The film is named for a Sufi word that translates roughly as “breath of life” or “blessing,” and it visits the Church of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem, the Ryoan-Ji temple in Kyoto, Lake Natron in Tanzania, burning oil fields in Kuwait, the smoldering precipice of an active volcano, a busy subway terminal, tribal celebrations of the Masai in Kenya, chanting monks in the Dip Tse Chok Ling monastery.

Made in Santa Fe 25 years ago, it remains a classic. (U.S., 1992, 97m).
