Host Santa Fe Prep didn’t win the team championships, but it sure did well in coming away with state qualifying times in Saturday’s annual Santa Fe Prep Griffin Invitational a the Genovese Chavez Community Center.

While Los Alamos swam off with both the girls and boys team title in a field of 13 schools, the Prep girls and boys combined qualified for 10 state races, the boys with six and the girls with four.

And add Santa Fe High senior Luke Shankin. He qualified in the 100-yard backstroke with a winning time of 58.40, led from the start, and was the only one to go under one minute. He also took first in the 100 freestyle in the state qualifying time of 50.29 with splits of 24:31 and 23:94

The rest of the qualifiers from the Santa Fe schools were all from Prep, with senior Riley Kinlaw adding the 200 freestyle to his expected long list with a winning time of 1:52.60. He also swam on the victorious 200 medley relay, the 200 freestyle relay, and the 400 freestyle relay.

All three teams featured the quartets of Riley, younger brother, Jordan, Reed Kellam and Cyrpess Hayunga. They turned in a time of 1:47.32 in the medley, 1:50.39 in the 200 free, and 3:36.48 in the 400 free. Jordan Kinlaw, a junior, had the fastest split of 21:10 in the 200.

In the 50 freestyle, Jordan and Hayunga just missed qualifying for state when they finished third and fourth, a second apart (24:33 and 24:34), but only the first and second finishers had state qualifying times.

The Griffin girls won two relays and placed second in the 200. In the medley and 400, they had the same foursome with Hayden Colfax, Arielie Nathan, Chelsea Griscom, and Sophia Cossum. In the 200, it was Kate Schiliro, Colfax, Nathan and Griscom.

They timed 1:50.39 in the 200 freestyle, 2:02.56 in the medley. In the 200, Prep finished second in 4:05.79 behind Los Alamos’ 1:49.48, but still qualified for state.

St. Michael’s senior Jacquline Hay came in third in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:05.10, which just missed the qualifying time of 1:05.09 that was turned in by the first two swimmers.

Griscom did not qualify in the 200 individual medley in the time of 2:23.23, but won the race and had splits of 24:31, 23:94, 24:34, and 33.72. And the 50 freestyle was won by Cossum and she qualified for state in 23:58.
