The Capital High girls played their way into the state basketball tournament for the first time in nine years. In finishing second in District 2-5A, they expected to make it in as a low seed, and were given No. 14 for Friday’s opener at 3rd seeded Gallup, which is 18-10.

The Jaguars, under first-year head coach Darren Casados, went 14-14 through the regular season and lost by three points in the district tournament final at first place Espanola Valley.

As for the Sundevils (15-11), they were given the No. 7 seed and will play host to 10th seeded Belen (15-14) in the opener.

In 4A, St. Michael’s (10-17) did not have an impressive season but did make its way in as a 13th seed and will play at 4th seeded Shiprock (18-9). And Santa Fe Indian School (24-4) probably deserved better after winning District 5-4A in the regular season and in the tournament final, but the Braves were given the 6th seed and gets to play host to 11th seeded Socorro (23-7).

Las Vegas Robertson, the 2-4A champion, is seeded second and is at 24-4 district opponent Taos (12-9), the 15th seed. West Las Vegas (15-10) is also out of 2-4A and gets a visit to Albuquerque Hope Christian (13-15), the 8th seed. The Huskies had won back-to-back state titles before losing in last year’s title game to Shiprock.

Pojoaque Valley (21-5), which finished second in District 2, I s home to 10th seeded Cobre (15-10). Portales (24-2) is the top seed and will open at home against 16th seeded Bosque Charter School (14-14).
Los Lunas (25-2) is the top seed in 5A and will take on 16th seeded Deming (12-14). The second seed is Bloomfield (23-5), and it will play visiting 15th seeded Lovington (11-16). The 7th seeded Espanola team is 15-11 and home to No. 10 Belen (15-14) Friday.

In 6A, there was no place for Santa Fe High, which lost its last 10 games, and finished at 10-19. The Demonettes had been seeded around 19th.

The top seed here is Albuquerque Cibola (24-4), and it will meet up with 16th seeded Rio Rancho Cleveland (9-18) in a clash of 1-6A schools. Hobbs (26-2) is the second seed and will play host to Albuquerque Atrisco Heritage (14-13), the 15th seed.

This class has six entries from district 1 and four from district 2, so there will be plenty of match-ups between the two, one being Las Cruces (24-4), the 5th seed, versus No. 12 Clovis (17-12), another being 6th seeded Rio Ranch High (21-7) taking on 11th seeded La Cueva (15-11).

In 3A, Pecos (23-4), the regular season and district tournament winner in District 3, was given the 8th seed and will be home versus 9th seed Tierra Encantada (18-7), with the two already meeting four times. The 11th seed is Espanola McCurdy (19-10) and it plays at 6th seeded Tularosa (18-7).

Texico, like its boys, is the No. 1 seed and will take a 22-4 record against visiting 16th seeded Santa Rosa (7-19). Second seeded Tobachi (21-6) meets up with 15th seeded Loving (14-11).

In 2A, 2nd seeded Mescalero Apache (20-1), coached by former Santa Fe High girl’s coach Elmer Chavez, has an opening rounder against visiting Escalante (12-13, the 15th seed. The 11th seed is Espanola McCurdy, and it plays at No. 6 Tularosa. Then there’s 3rd seeded Penasco (23-4) home to 14th seed Questa (13-15), and 10th seeded Pine Hill (15-9) heading to 7th seeded Lordsburg, which is 19-7.
