Everything was going well under new head coach Cindy Roybal. Her Santa Fe High girl’s basketball team was losing tight games, but on the positive side they also won five in a row, and were 9-7 overall.

And then, it was welcome to District 2-6A. Roybal had coached Santa Fe Pojoaque Valley in 4A, Santa Fe Indian School in 3A and Espanola Valley
In 5A, but this was her first time at facing the bigger schools.

So what followed the winning streak that ended after bragging-right wins over Capital and St. Michael’s, well its been all downhill for the Demonetts. Saturday night’s 36-27 setback at home against Albuquerque Sandia was the sixth straight by Santa Fe High and kept it stuck in the basement at 0-6.

And it doesn’t figure to stop Tuesday night when the Demonettes, now 9-13 overall, visit Albuquerque La Cueva, which handed them a 72-29 whooping when they met previously at Toby Roybal Memorial gymnasium.

For Sandia, it was the second time it turned back Santa Fe High, and this time it brought a third-straight win and put it at 8-12 overall, but 4-2 in district right behind 5-0 frontrunner Albuquerque Eldorado, which disposed of Clovis, 51-30, Saturday night.

In 3-3A, Pecos took to the short road to turn back Santa Fe’s Tierra Encantada, 57-52, and move closer to the district championship. The Panthers advanced to 18-3 (5-0 in district) and kept the Alacranes in second place at 4-2 and dropped their overall record to 16-5.

The district champion gets to play host for the tournament final, and right now it looks to be Pecos against Tierra Encantada.

It got a little hairy for the Panthers in the stretch run. Up 57-45 with four minutes remaining, the Alacranes made a run, scored seven unanswered points, but could only close to what turned out to be the final score. It was just a little too late in a stretch where Pecos didn’t score.

There were injuries. The home team’s Yasmin Torres was bumped by the Panthers’ Cassie Muller as she raced down court after a steal, and lost her balance and slammed face down into the hardwood. She was taken away on a stretcher.

The Alacranes also sat down Destiny Nevarez for several minutes after she picked up a shin concussion, and Maylin Hernandez of Pecos twisted her ankle when she collided with a teammate, and did not return.

Muller missed some key free throws, but still scored 17 points.

Torres’ injury wars perhaps the most serious, and it incited the Tierra Encantada fans who were already frustrated by what they felt was a lack of foul shots.

One home team fan even walked onto the court to confront the referees. After he got in a few words, he was escorted off the premise.

In 2-4A, Pojoaque had no problem disposing of Taos on the road, 63-36, to move to 19-3 overall and 4-1 in district. The Tigers dropped to 7-15 and 1-4.

The lone Elkettes’ district loss was to first place Las Vegas Robertson.
In 4-4A, first place Moriarty defeated Albuquerque Hope Christian at home, 51-41.

In 1-6A, Rio Rancho rolled over Albuquerque Volcano Vista, 57-42, and in a non district contest, Estancia took down East Mountain, 62-45.

There was also a 2-0 forfeit awarded to Walatowa Charter when Santa Fe Waldorf didn’t have enough players for the 1-1A game.
