She’s an 8th grader on the Santa Fe Prep swim team, and at Saturday’s District I championships held at Los Alamos, Sophia Gossum gave notice after winning both the 50 and 100-yard freestyles, both in state qualifying times.
In the 50, she turned in a 25:33 after swimming 25:29 in the preliminaries. In the 100, she topped the field in 54.77.
If that wasn’t enough, she also swam the opening leg on the 200 freestyle relay that finished second in the state-qualifying time of 1:44.93. She teamed with other undergraduates in sophomore Hayden Colfax, junior Arielle Nathan, and freshman Chelsea Griscom.
Griscom was also victorious in the 200 individual medley in 2:22.58. It wasn’t a state qualifying time, but she did have one in coming in second in the 100 breaststroke in the time of 1:11.55.
In the grueling 500 freestyle, Santa Fe High junior Anika Duran placed third in 4:05.26.
In the 100 backstroke, it was St. Michael’s senior Jacqueline Hay finished second in the finals at 1:05.20 after swimming the state qualifying time of 1:04.61 in the preliminaries.
In the 400 freestyle relay, the Griffins took the runner-up spot with the same quartet of Gossum, Colfax, Nathan and Griscom, and timed 4:04.64 to also gain state in this event.
Host Los Alamos, which swept three events, dominated the field with 604 points, while Prep scored 290 for second place. In fourth was Santa Fe High with 178, St. Michael’s sixth with 136, and Desert Academy ninth with 70.
