Sierra Club Rio Grande Chapter releases endorsement slate for Santa Fe city elections

By The Sierra Club

The Sierra Club Northern New Mexico Group’s Political Team endorsed candidates in each of Santa Fe’s races this week.

“After thoroughly reviewing questionnaires and records and interviewing candidates, the Political Team is proud to endorse a strong group of candidates for the March city elections,” said Susan Martin, chair of the Sierra Club Northern New Mexico Group Political Committee. “We trust that these candidates can take on our city’s challenges and extend its leadership in providing safe drinking water, clean air and a livable climate for future generations of Santa Feans.”

Mayor: Alan Webber

Webber distinguished himself with his knowledge of and commitment to environmental and progressive issues.

“His heart is in making the city more livable, and his entrepreneurial skills can achieve those on-the-ground improvements,” Martin said. “Webber has a real vision for Santa Fe’s environment, with a plan for achieving it. His early experience working for the city of Portland led to the ‘livable cities’ movement.”

“The endorsement of the Sierra Club is a great honor,” Webber said. “We share a commitment to make Santa Fe the most sustainable city in America. I’m looking forward to working with the Sierra Club and our whole conservation community to fight climate change, reduce carbon emissions, and expand our success in water conservation. Santa Feans know better than anyone how to bring together ecology and economy to create a sustainable future.”

District 1: Sig Lindell (incumbent)

“Sig led the way on the city’s single-stream recycling program, which has dramatically increased Santa Fe’s recycling levels, and sponsored and passed the bill to prohibit inhumane trapping of animals within the city limits,” Martin said.

District 2: Carol Romero Wirth

“Carol’s deep understanding of water policy, her work on the city charter commission and her pledge to be an advocate for coordinating, cooperating and working regionally on our resource issues is a recipe for creating an environmental champion on council,” Martin said.

Roman “Tiger” Abeyta

“Roman served as Santa Fe County manager during complex negotiations over annexation and the the Buckman Diversion project. His professional career began in land use and planning, and he approaches our resource conflicts as regional issues,” Martin said.

Greg Scargall
“Greg lives the Sierra Club motto ‘Explore, enjoy, and protect the planet.’ For the past four years, Greg has passionately led teams of military veteran volunteers to remove trash from the Santa Fe River and other local areas. He’s a coordinator at the Santa Fe Community College Veterans Resource Center, which the Military Times named the No. 1 two-year career technical institution,” Martin said.

The Rio Grande Sierra Club’s Northern New Mexico Group represents more than 3,000 members in Santa Fe striving to explore, enjoy and protect the planet.
