Coming off a close home loss to Capital High, its first in six starts, the Santa Fe Indian School softball team took it out on visiting Grants in Thursday’s doubleheader.

The first game of the non district pair was a tight one, but the Braves squeaked it out 4-3, than took game two with a 13-3 rout to advance their record to 7-1.

Indian School head coach Oliver Torres said his team still had cold bat coming off the 8-6 loss to the Jaguars.

“We won, but we couldn’t the hit the ball,” he said. “We were probably still getting over the loss to Capital, but we had a good post-game talk and talked about the need to refocus and the barrel on the bat.”

His Braves got away to a slow start in the opener, but with the score tied at 2-2, added another two runs to take a 4-2 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning. Alexis Garcia took care of the pitching, allowing the three runs while striking out six in going the route.

In game two, Indian School quickly put eight runs across in the first inning and Arianna Marcotte did her part from the circle by holding the Pirates to only three runs in hurling the distance.

Leanna Lewis came through with a double and triple in the second game.

Capital advanced its record to 7-2 with Thursday’s 11-3 win over visiting Pojoaque in non district play. It was the fourth straight triumph for the Jags as pitcher Alex Hernandez allowed eight hits, walked five, and struck out seven.

Hernandez also helped her cause with three hits, and teammate Sylvia Pincheira went 4-for-4, which included a double and four RBI. Then there was Adaline Carrasco picking up three hits in four at-bars and driving home a pair of runs.

The Elkettes dropped to 4-6.
