Gun Violence Prevention Youth Rally

This Day of Action is a student-driven event planned by students from Earth Care, Fight for Our Lives Albuquerque, Fight For Our Lives Santa Fe, and the Student Wellness Action Team of SFPS.

Santa Fe, NM: Join students for a panel discussion at the Santa Fe State Capitol in Committee Room 307 at 10:30 a.m. Panelists include House Majority Leader Brain Egolf; Senate Majority Leader Peter Wirth; Representative Linda Trujillo; State Police Chief Pete Kassetas; JoAnn Sartorius of Prevention New Mexico; Sue O’Brien, Director of Student Wellness at SFPS; and Miranda Viscoli, co-president of New Mexicans to Prevent Gun Violence.

From 12:00 -1:00 pm there will be Community Tables that will include students writing letters to both local and federal elected officials; voter registration; and an art project honoring children who have been shot and killed in New Mexico, facilitated by New Mexicans to Prevent Violence.

From 1:00 -1:45 pm there will be a student led rally with students speaking on the multi- faceted issue of gun violence prevention. This event will occur on the east side of the Roundhouse.

New Mexico just became the seventh deadliest state for gun deaths. Children in New Mexico aged 0 – 19 are killed by guns at a rate almost 60 percent higher than the national average. Youth in New Mexico are likely to die by suicide at a rate 75 percent higher than the national average – more than half of these suicides will involve a firearm.
