Seniors Lucas McNatt of Capital and Theodore Goujon of Santa Fe High are in the stretch run and hope for the best when the state track and field championships are run.

McNatt, probably the top Jaguar athlete, won last year’s 5A high jump when he had the fewer misses among the three others who went over the bar at 6-feet. Now he’s out to win it again while adding the discus to his agenda.

The discus is rather new for him, but he comes off winning it at last Saturday’s Jaguar Invitational with a throw of 128-01, and is now in quest of perhaps winning two field events. Plus he will have to find time to run a leg or two in the relays. He has speed, which he showed by also winning the 200 (23:43) at the Jaguar.

As for Goujon, he first qualified for state his sophomore year, but the 100 and 200 meters field was not yet in his range. He didn’t get discouraged, said he’d do better next, but although his times improved, he was again unsuccessful in making it to the podium reserved for the first six finishers.

But now he’s making a strong bid to crash the 6A party, and as McNatt has done, he, too, has added another race, the 400. Now he has the confidence, the experience. He won the 100 last week in 11:33 and the 400 in 52.50.

Another Demon who picked up a pair of wins was senior William Wiebe topping the field in the 110 and 300 hurdles. He did not compete at state last year and is trying to qualify in the hurdles. He has clocked 18:36 in the 100 and 45:64 in the 300.

St. Michael’s senior, Rico Gurule, had a busy day. He ran legs on the 4 x 100, sprint medley, and 4 x 400 relays, and it brought him a pair of first places as the third leg in both the 4 x 100 and 4 x 400, as well as racing second leg for the firstplace sprint medley foursome.

This also helped the Horsemen win the team title that the Lady Horsemen also won.

Santa Fe Prep senior Sean Coles was first in the triple jump at 39-02, second in the long jump, and ran a leg for the winning 4 x 200 relay team.

The long jump went to Horsemen senior Shawn Roybal in 19-00.75. In the 800, St. Michael’s sophomore Justice Johnson won in 2:10.45, just beating junior teammate Justin Angel by six-tenths of a second.

The 1,600 went to Pecos senior Josh DeHerrera in the time of 4:30.55, with Santa Fe Indian School senior Thomas Lucero second in 4:51,
Another Panther, senior Michael Montano, topped the field in the 3,200 by running 10:47.28, with Horsemen junior Eli Steward the runner-up in 10:52.01. And McNatt just edged St. Michael’s junior Hayden Lee in the 200. Lee turned in a 23:74.  oH   H

The other members of the Prep 4 x 200 were senior Harrison Trainer, junior Luke Stein, and versatile junior Sam Sparks on the anchor leg, They timed 1:33.72.

Passing the stick with Gurule in St. Michael’s 4 x 400 were junior Sebastian  Alcarez, Lee, and Angel. In the 4 x 100, he joined with Roybal, Lee and sophomore Michael Waring, and they raced 45:26.

And the sprint medley also included Waring, Alcarez and junior Adrian Veruette. They ran a 4:03.94 on the 200, 200, 400, 800 legs.
