BeWellnm Provides Three Tips to Stay Healthy During the Summer

By Be Well NM

With summer officially here, New Mexicans are planning trips to Elephant Butte, weekend bike rides in the Bosque, and relaxing times under the cottonwoods in the backyard.

But with all of the adventure awaiting, don’t let your health get in the way of making memories with family and friends. Below are three tips, provided by beWellnm, New Mexico’s Health Insurance Exchange, for staying healthy all summer long.

  • Get Moving – The warm weather and clear skies provide an opportunity to get creative with how you get your daily exercise. Going on a walk, taking a hike, or riding your bike are all great ways to increase movement, which if done regularly, helps prevent various health problems including cardiovascular disease and depression. Health care professionals recommend 30 minutes of exercise daily.
  • Safety First – Accidents happen, but the appropriate safety precautions can make the difference between spending your day relaxing at home with your family and spending your day in the emergency room.Simple things like wearing a helmet and ensuring pools are properly gated can help prevent unwanted medical emergencies.
  • Stay Hydrated – With temperatures nearing 100 degrees in parts of New Mexico, it’s important to stay hydrated. Instead of reaching for that soda or other sugary drink to quench your thirst, fill up a tall glass of water. Aim to drink six to eight 8-ounce glasses of water each day – more if you’re outside and active.
