New Mexico Activities Association’s board of directors meet

Next NMAA board of directors meeting Sept. 19, 2018

The New Mexican Activities Association’s board of directors held a recent regular session at the NMAA Hall of Pride and Honor.

Executive director Sally Marquez gave her director’s report that included information on the success of the 2017-2018 school year, sportsmanship, the NMAA and NFHS foundation efforts to help schools with AEDS, and current facility discussions with the University of New Mexico.

There was also a congratulations made to T.J. Parks, Scott Evans, and Austin Denton for receiving NFHS national awards.

Assistant director Tammy Richards presented the NMAA financial report that included information on the state music events that include choir and concert band held at Rio Rancho Cleveland High, as well the many activity state events that occurred during the spring, and the work of, the student leadership advisory council on its leadership handbook.

Assistant to the commissioner of officials Nate Acosta presented the New Mexico officials association report that included information on the officials appreciation weeks held throughout 2017-2018, plus the current process for election of officials and representatives on the NMOA executive board, and the battlefield 2 ball fields program, as well the various summer basketball camps taking place over the next two months, and also the NMOA state clinic and awards banquet in July.

In addition, Sally Marquez presented a discussion item pertaining to officials pay, and a proposed increase for the 2019-2020 school year. Then there was San Jon Schools Board President Franklin Gibson presenting and informational/discussion item pertaining to a possible “tri-op” with House and Grady schools.

The board of directors took action on the following items:

Voted to approve “esports” as an NMAA sanctioned activity.

Voted to approve an adjustment to state wrestling qualifying number by class.

Voted to approve an update to the state seeding criteria for wrestling.

Voted to approve an adjustment to the number of A-3A medalists at state wrestling.

Voted to approve an adjustment to district alignment for 6-man football.

Voted to approve a change to the number of automatic state qualifiers for 6-man football.

Voted to adopt updates to the NMAA governance structure.

Voted to place 3A state track and field meet with the A-2A state meet.

Voted to approve a proposal that requires schools to complete their full district schedule in order to be eligible for the state championships.

Voted to approve a proposal to update sportsmanship bylaws pertaining to crowd control.

Voted to approve a proposal to update eligibility bylaws pertaining to undue influence.

The next NMAA board of directors meeting is scheduled for Sept. 19, 2018.
