SFPS Receives Increase in K-3 Plus Funding

By Santa Fe Public Schools

SFPS has received K-3 Plus extended school year grant funds in excess of $1,385,773 for the summer of 2018.  This will afford the District the opportunity to provide services to at least 1,098 Kindergarten to third grade students, an increase of service to approximately 308 students over last summer. This is an increase of over $419,000 from the final amount received last year

The K-3 Plus extended year program extends the school year for students in kindergarten through 3rd grade by 25 instructional days that begin before the fall school year starts in August. The K–3 Plus extended year program provides funding for additional educational time for students in eligible schools. K–3 Plus extended year program eligibility includes public schools in which eighty percent or more of the students are eligible for free or reduced-fee lunch at the time the public school applies for the program, or an elementary school with a D or F PED grade from the previous year.  Dates for the SFPS’ extended year program are June 18 – July 24, 2018.

This year’s SFPS extended year program is developed with a STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math) theme and is entitled Camp Adventure: Explore, Discover, & Learn! Schools have been actively recruiting students since early February through the use of flyers, banners, stickers, and individual communications. The program will be held from June 18 – July 24, from approximately 8:00 am – 2:00 pm Monday through Friday. Parents and guardians of incoming kindergarten through 3rd grade students should call their fall school for exact times and more information. Students must attend or be enrolled to attend kindergarten in one of the above schools during the regular school year to participate in the program.

The program will challenge students’ curiosity to discover more about how the world works and include field trips to fun places, hands-on ways to explore new things, free books, materials, and a backpack. Breakfast, lunch, snacks and transportation are provided for students. At this time enrollment is nearing capacity; however, parents are invited to reach out to the following sites  where the K-3 Plus extended year program will be implemented to inquire as to availability:

Dates for both programs are June 4- June 29, 2018 with a student orientation date for middle school students scheduled on the morning of June 1 on the ECO campus.

Sweeney Elementary is welcoming the AVID Excel Summer Language Bridge Program.

SFPS continues to collaborate with its City of Santa Fe partners and will share facilities with the City’s Summer Youth Program offered at Aspen, Chaparral, El Camino, and Salazar schools, while The YMCA Program will be hosted at Pinon Elementary School.

To start the new school year in 2018-2019, SFPS will initiate new sites into its Pre-Kindergarten Program. As the recipient of the 3rd largest Pre-K grant in New Mexico, $2,330,825 (a 26% increase over the prior year), SFPS will provide services for approximately 430 Pre-K students.
