MEOW WOLF PRESENTS CARLOS MEDINA: EL CANTADOR

By Meow Wolf

The first Meow Wolf recording artist debut is El Cantador by Carlos Medina. Carlos is a beloved old-school New Mexican singer and viral video sensation. On August 11 he presents his first release with a performance and party at Meow Wolf Santa Fe at 1352 Rufina Circle. Doors open at 8:00 p.m., show at 9:00. Medina will play with a seven piece Mariachi, perform bilingual comedy in Spanish and English, and conclude the evening with a dance.

Carlos Medina: El Cantador features ten songs, including six originals, recorded in New Mexico with members of Albuquerque-based Mariachi Luna Azul under the direction of David Vargas. The release will be available as a CD and digital download at www.carlos.mw and shop.meowwolf.com as well as on Spotify, Apple Music, and other major streaming services.

“People around Northern New Mexico and the southwest have been enjoying Carlos’ many talents for years,” said Meow Wolf CEO Vince Kadlubek. “He can move you deeply as a musician and then keep you in stitches as a comedian, so he’s the ideal choice for our new effort to represent special talent on the world stage.”

Born Here All My Life
Carlos, like many original Meow Wolf members, is a born-and-raised New Mexican. He represents both Hispanic and Native American heritage, which contributes a special perspective rooted in the centuries-old, deep cultural traditions of the unique region. He has also been inspired across the musical spectrum from country to reggae.

Carlos’ music career began at age seven when he played for family friends in bars near his hometown of Ribera. Since then, he has played in 38 states and sold tens of thousands of recordings that draw on different regional music traditions. As El Caballero, he has played regional Mexican dance music for nearly 40 years including with music legends such as Al Hurricane, Los Tigres del Norte, and El Gringo. As El Cantador, Carlos performs Mariachi music with a twist. He is often called a rebel for introducing the accordion to the Mariachi ensemble, a distinct break with tradition.

The Norte Saying Of The Day
Since Carlos uploaded the first episode of his The Norte Saying of the Day, the new comedic web series has made him an overnight viral sensation. His comedian persona “Graviel de la Plaga” embraces the idiomatic “Spanglish” language and free-spirited culture of Northern New Mexico. The name “Graviel” was chosen as a common local mispronunciation of the name Gabriel. “La Plaga” is the fictional village where he’s from.

Graviel’s success has positioned Carlos to become a major Chicano comedic voice, and El Cantador is the first of many planned collaborations between Meow Wolf and Medina. Several narrative film projects and a national stand-up comedy tour are currently being developed.

“I love working at Meow Wolf because I am empowered to create without limits,” said Medina. “I am surrounded by people that inspire me and I get to do what I love.”
