The young Monte del Sol girl’s soccer team under first-team head coach Jennifer Gutierrez got away to a dismal start, but there’s nothing like having fun and also winning, and they scored their second victory in the last four starts by topping Santa Fe Indian School, 4-1 on Saturday.

The Dragons (2-13-0) lost their first 13 before turning back West Las Vegas and now the Braves (2-12-1) at Santa Fe’s Municipal Recreation Complex.

Eighth grader Jennifer Madrigal’s three goals brought her the hat trick and

senior and co-captain Adeline Chacon scored the other. She is one of only three seniors on the roster.

“It was excellent,” said Gutierrez, “and we ndid not make a mistake in the first half. All of the girls were playing with heart the entire match. They were passing and communicating, which is something we’ve been working on in practice”

Monte del Sol takes the field today against Academy of Technology and The Classics in a 3 p.m. start at Camino Real Field. In a previous match, the Phoenix won 6-1.

Santa Fe High took on District 5-5A foe Albuquerque High and both the boys and girls were blanked. The boys went down 6-0 at home, the girls 3-0 on the road.

The Capital girls who lost 7-1 Saturday to visiting Albuquerque Manzano in  5-5A play, are at Albuquerque High Wednesday. Versus Manzano, the Jaguars scored their lone goal in the second half. The Capital boys got past Albuquerque Rio Grande, 3-2, Saturday, to avenge a previous 1-0 setback, and are now 11-5 overall and 4-2 in district.
