In pursuit of its first district soccer championship in five years, St. Michael’s did what it had to Saturday afternoon, turning back first-place Robertson, 2-1, to take over the top spot in 2-1A/3A.

Head coach Mike Feldewert was overjoyed that his Horsemen took care of business.

“Unlike last year,” said the coach now in his fourth season, “when Robertson’s top player, midfielder (Musah) Dumbia, got behind us, found the seams and got behind us, it made him a scoring threat, but this time we stretched him out and made him move side-to-side. We continued to play well at this part of the season.”

Now 12-5-1 overall and 7-2 in district, St. Michael’s needs a win over Albuquerque Sandia Prep on Tuesday to wrap up first place.

As for the high-scoring Dumbia, he did score the lone Cardinal goal, but the Horsemen found the goal two minutes into the match when senior Justice Johnson took a pass from Esteban Rigales and brought a 1-0 lead.

In the 35th minute, Eric Nunez assisted on a boot to Wesley Sage Graham at the top of the penalty box, with Graham scoring on a shot just under the crossbar. That made it 2-0, Dumbia cut the lead in half in the 72nd minute, but St. Michael’s maintained the advantage.

In District 5-5A at Santa Fe High, the boy’s game hadn’t reported a result against Albuquerque Manzano, but the Demonttes were handed a 2-0 setback to fall to 8-7-1 overall and 2-5-1 in district following the doubleheader.

Manzano scored both goals in the second half, and Santa Fe High, without scoring, now has only eight goals in district and 23 overall. The goals came from sophomores Janell Martinez and Blakley Edgar, with freshman Frieda Anderson minding the goal.

Then there was Capital High’s boys taking the road to Albuquerque Sandia and returning with a 1-0 zip to even their district mark at 4-4 and advance to  11-7 overall. .The girls match was a mismatch as the Jaguars were whooped 11-0, and in the previous meeting between the two, it was 11-1.

Capital’s girls are now 5-11 overall and have lost all eight district matches.

Wednesday, the Jags get a visit from district and city rival Santa Fe High.
