Santa Fe High senior Brock McKinney continues his sparkling cross country run by finishing third in Saturday morning’s annual Rio Rancho Jamboree in 5-killomers time of 17:19.70

The Academy of Technology and The Classics boys joined the girls in having an impressive run at Saturday morning’s annual Rio Rancho Jamboreecross country 5-killometers.

It was the best effort of the season for the team. It didn’t finish first as the girls did, but placed as the small schools runner-up with 78 points, 18 behind first place Cloudcroft.

Senior Cole Ferguson led the way by finishing sixth in 18:37.10 over the course that will again host the state championships in three weeks. Right behind in seventh was junior Gonzalo Reyes in 18:37.40, and 18th was sophomore Ian Apadoca in 18:57.40.

In 11th place was Desert Academy senior Jakob Kaare-Rasmussen in 18:50.16, and ATC had junior Lukas Clausson taking 21st (19:19.40) and its No. 5 runner, junior Odin Frostad, ran 48th in 20:16.90.

In 11th place came Santa Fe Indian School freshman Christopher Humeiews in the time of 16:43, The Braves took the 11th spot among the large schools with 318 points, with Rio Rancho Cleveland taking first with 113 and city rival Rio Rancho High second with 153. There were 124 runners in this race.

It was also a good run for Santa Fe Prep. It placed fourth in the other large-school race with 191 points. Senior Adrian Whitten was the top Griffin as he took 11th in 17:48.80, and junior teammate Griffin Rutherford was on his heels in 18th place and clocked 17:53.60.

But the leading runner from Santa Fe was again senior Brock McKinney of the Demons. He had his best run of an impressive campaign by finishing third in 17:19.70. He was just behind runner-up Nick Yaconee of Mayfield, who timed 17:12.40, and the winner, Zerai Epherem of Albuquerque Sandia Prep won handily in 16:26.70.

St. Michael’s placed 26th with 629 points and Capital was 29th with 689. The top Horseman was senior Adrian Veurete-Maya coming in 38th in 18:32.40.

Los Lunas took first place with 178 points, four better than Lovington, and six better than Moriarty, with Prep right in the mix. Los Lunas also placed on top in the girl’s race with 103 points, with Lovington second again with 122. Here, the Griffin girls scored 290 points for 12th place.
