Disabled Vets to have More Choices in NM

By New Mexico Senate Republican office

New Mexico military veterans who are disabled will be given options over the type of license plates they receive for free from the state, under a bill sponsored by Senator Craig Brandt and Senator Ron Griggs.  In  appreciation of their service and sacrifice,  the state  gives disabled vets two free plates, but they are only allowed to receive the “disabled” veteran plate for free.

Under Senator Brandt’s bill, vets will be given the choice to have a standard license plate – like a Chile plate and the Turquoise and Yellow Centennial Plate- or a Vet plate like the Air Force Veteran plate or stay with  the disabled veteran plate.

The Senators’ bill also clarifies that the vets are indeed eligible for two plates free of fees that can be any other specialty plates or standard plates.   Current MVD policy is to allow disabled veterans to have only disabled veteran plates even though the statute permits them to have other special plates.

Senator Brandt said, “These vets did not choose to be disabled, but we can sure give them a choice of what their license plate looks like on their vehicles. It is the lease we can do.”

According to MVD, currently there are over 26,000 disabled vets plates in New Mexico.
