Santa Fe High’s dismal shooting continued its course as the girls took a 77-22 District 5-5A whooping at first place Albuquerque Sandia Wednesday night.

Once at 4-4 under new head coach Matt Morris, the Demonettes are now at 8-15 overall and 2-5 in district. The two wins came over winless Albuquerque Rio Grande, and they are now home versus Albuquerque Manzano Friday night.

Capital’s girls also took to the road and returned with a 53-39 defeat against Albuquerque High, the surprise team in the district, and in second place at 5-2 (8-13 overall) behind 7-0 Sandia.

Now both the Demonettes and Jaguars are home Friday night. In the previous contest against Manzano, Santa Fe High took a 51-38 defeat. The Monarchs are 9-11 overall and 3-3 in district. Capital (9-13, 3-4) gets a visit from Sandia, which won the first encounter 61-43.

The Jags were once all even at 4-4, but then lost three straight. They are 5-5 at home. Against the Bulldogs, they fell behind 25-11 when the home side went on a 22-7 run in the second quarter. Capital struggled with its shooting, going 6-for-30 in the first half,

In the third quarter, it trimmed the lead to 29-22 when Rebecca Sorenson turned in a dozen points, but back came Albuquerque High on a 9-2 run to build the lead to 38-24 with 3:26 left in the quarter.

Santa Fe High’s shooting was also poor, and it didn’t help when Sandia scored 22 of the game’s first 24 points. Meanwhile, the Demonettes could put together only 10 points in the second quarter and were far behind at 44-12 at halftime and 62-18 after three quarters. Mari Fernandez was Santa Fe High’s leading scorer with nine points.

In 2-3A, first place and top-ranked Robertson (22-1, 7-0) rolled over visiting Santa Fe Indian School and swept the second place Braves, 58-35, who dropped to 3-2 in district and 19-4 overall. West Las Vegas traveled to Raton and left with a 66-34 romp, with the Dons now 2-3 in district and 13-9 overall. The Tigers are 5-17 overall and winless in six district starts.

Today, Pecos plays a 7-2A doubleheader at Santa Rosa, with the girls leading off in the 5:30 opener, and the boys following. The boys are 19-3, the girls are 17-4, and they swept the Lions the first time they played.

Saturday, the Panthers travel to Clayton, who they swept at home in the previous doubleheader. On Feb. 22, Texico comes to Pecos to play two.
