It’s a first time double digits victories in a season for the Academy of Technology and The Classics girls program after Saturday afternoon‘s 60-21 rout over visiting Monte del Sol.
In Ron Drake’s first season as the Phoenix head coach after guiding the Pecos girls to their initial state championship last year, his young team upped its mark to 10-8 following back-to-back 9-win campaigns in 2017 and 2018.
Expect that those teams and last years that won seven times totaled 51 setbacks, but now Drake has a team sparked by 8th graders and freshmen learning the ropes, climbing them to new heights as it also advanced to 2-1 in District 2-2A.
Eighth graders Perla Miramontes and Charli Koseoglu combined for 33 points, with the former tossing in 18 and adding a trio of 3s. Koseoglu added 15 and brought down nine rebounds. Freshman point guard Chanelle Jaeger chipped in with 15 points.
Next stop for ATC is a home game versus Santa Fe’s Tierra Encantada on Tuesday. The Dragons dropped to and play Tuesday at combo Desert Academy/Santa Fe Waldorf on the IAIA court.
In other girl’s games, Pecos (18-4) romped 59-33 over Rehoboth Christian (13-7) in a non district contest at home.
And other non district action found Pojoaque Valley (17-6) handing visiting Albuquerque Del Norte (5-15) a 48-37 defeat, and Albuquerque St. Pius X (9-11) taking the road up to Los Alamos and leaving with a 50-41 victory as the Hilltoppers fell to 11-11.
Pecos holds down the top spot in District 7-2A at 3-0 after turning back Clayton, Texico and Santa Rosa the first time around. Texico is 2-1 in district, Clayton 1-2, and Santa Rosa winless in three starts.
