Catches of the week

Caballo Lake:
Robert Resendez, of Las Cruces, caught a 29-inch walleye using a white, curly tail grub March 6.

Berrendo Creek: AJ Palmer, of Roswell, caught and released nine trout and one 18-inch, 4.5-pound largemouth bass using a black Rooster Tail spinner March 3.

Escondida Lake: Haylie Owens, age 12, of Rio Rancho caught a 6-pound bass using homemade bait March 8.

Lake Van: Valerie Wyatt, of Roswell, caught a 17-inch catfish using chicken liver March 7.

San Juan River: Luana Lucero of Bloomfield, fishing with her grandchildren Joseline and Veronica Martinez, caught a 20-inch rainbow trout using Fireballs March 8. Nathan Gilbert, age 11, of Farmington caught and released a 13-inch Colorado pikeminnow near Farmington using chicken liver March 7.

Seven Springs Brood Pond: Owen Middagh, age 8, of Albuquerque caught a 20-inch, 4-pound rainbow trout using Gulp bait March 8.

Tingley Beach: Mateo Sanchez, age 7, and Marcus Sanchez, age 5, of Rio Rancho caught their limit of trout using green PowerBait March 8.

The following reports came in late, but are definitely worth mentioning:

Elephant Butte Lake: Glenn Hinkle, of Elephant Butte, caught a 5-pound smallmouth bass using a spinnerbait Feb. 29.

Santa Cruz Lake: Romeo Lopez, age 13, of Penasco caught a 21-inch rainbow trout trolling a trout jig at the upper section of the lake March 1.

Cimarron River: Stream flow near Cimarron Monday morning was not measured due to ice. We had no reports from anglers this week.

Clayton Lake: Fishing for trout was fair. The boat ramp is closed due to low water level.

Conchas Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Costilla Creek: Stream flow near Costilla Monday morningwas not measured due to ice. We had no reports from anglers this week.

Cowles Ponds: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Coyote Creek: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Eagle Nest Lake: The lake is closed to ice fishing due to unsafe ice conditions.

Eagle Rock Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Fawn Lakes: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Gallinas River: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Hopewell Lake: The gate to the camping area is closed. We had no reports from anglers this week.

Lake Alice: The lake is closed to ice fishing due to unsafe ice conditions.

Lake Maloya: The lake is closed to ice fishing due to unsafe ice conditions.

Los Pinos River: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Maxwell Lake 13: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Monastery Lake: Fishing for trout was good using yellow PowerBait.

Morphy Lake: The lake is closed for a renovation project on the dam and no firm opening date has been set.

Pecos River: Stream flow near the town of Pecos Monday morning was 38.7 cfs. Fishing for trout was good using worms and PowerBait.

Red River: Stream flow below the hatchery Monday morning was 45.0 cfs. Fishing for trout was fair to good using woolly buggers and salmon eggs.

Rio Grande: Stream flow at the Taos Junction Bridge Monday morning was 584 cfs. Fishing for trout was fair to good using woolly buggers. Fishing for catfish near Albuquerque was good using cut bait.

Rio Hondo: Stream flow Monday morning near Valdez was not measured due to ice. We had no reports from anglers this week.

Rio Mora: Stream flow Monday morning was 7.35 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.

Rio Pueblo: Stream flow near Penasco Monday morning was not measured due to ice. Fishing for brown trout in the evening was good using grey flies.

Santa Cruz Reservoir: Fishing for trout was good using green PowerBait and spinners.

Shuree Ponds: The ponds are closed. Fishing is open on the Valle Vidal, including Shuree Ponds, July 1-Dec. 31.

Springer Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Storrie Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Stubblefield Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Ute Lake: Fishing for bass was fair using spinnerbaits and vibrating jigs in shallow water during the afternoon. Fishing for walleye and white bass was slow. Fishing for catfish was fair using punch bait. The surface water temperature was in the upper 40s and the main lake was clear.


Northwest Fishing Report

Abiquiu Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week. Due to low water levels, anglers are advised to use four-wheel drive vehicles to launch boats and watch for obstructions on the water.

Animas River: Water flow below Aztec Monday morningwas 218 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.

Albuquerque Area Drains:Fishing for trout was fair to good using white PowerBait.

Bluewater Lake: Fishing for trout was very good using cheese PowerBait, rainbow PowerBait and woolly buggers. Fishing for tiger muskie was fair using swimbaits and spinnerbaits. Fishing for catfish was slow using chicken liver. The lake was reported as ice free and open to boating.

Brazos River: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Canjilon Lakes: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Chama River: Monday morning flows below El Vado and Abiquiu were 99.5 cfs and 50.6 cfs respectively. We had no reports from below El Vado Lake this week. We had no reports from below Abiquiu Lake this week. Anglers should expect seasonal closures on the Rio Chama below Abiquiu Dam until March as a fish habitat improvement project is currently underway. Cochiti Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

El Vado Lake: The lake is closed to ice fishing and awaiting open water.

Fenton Lake: The lake is closed to ice fishing due to unsafe ice conditions. The lake is open for day use and camping. Please remember that only two cutthroat trout are allowed to be harvested per day within the regular five-fish limit.

Heron Lake: The lake is closed to ice fishing and awaiting open water. Anglers are encouraged to call the state park office (575) 588-7470 for current conditions.

Jemez Waters: Stream flow on the Jemez River near the town of Jemez Monday morning was 59.3 cfs. Fishing for trout was good below Battleship Rock using PowerBait and nymph flies. Fishing for trout was good in streams above the town of La Cueva using crickets.

Laguna del Campo: Currently closed. Open May 1 to October 1.

Lagunitas Lakes: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Lake Farmington: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Manzano Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

McGaffey Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Navajo Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

San Gregorio Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

San Juan River: Stream flow Monday morning was 418 cfs. Fishing for rainbow and brown trout in the quality waters was good using size 24 and 26 midge larva flies and size 24 and 22 Baetis nymph flies. Water clarity was about 2-feet of visibility. Fishing for trout in the bait waters was good using Fireballs, egg pattern flies and spinners.

Seven Springs Brood Pond: Fishing for rainbow trout was good using Gulp bait, black and green leech pattern flies, black Pistol Petes and brown dry flies.

Tingley Beach: Fishing for trout was good using green PowerBait. Fishing for trout in the catch and release pond was fair using black and gold bead head zebra midge flies.

Trout Lakes: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Alumni Pond: Fishing for trout was fair to good using garlic peach PowerBait, corn and marshmallows.

Bear Canyon Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Bill Evans Lake: Fishing for trout was good using cheese-flavored PowerBait and pheasant tail nymph flies.

Caballo Lake: Fishing for walleye was fair to good using a jig head with a white curly tail grub.

Elephant Butte Lake: Fishing for white bass was fair to good using white crank baits.

Escondida Lake: Fishing for bass was fair.

Gila River: Stream flow Monday morning was 270 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.

Glenwood Pond: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Lake Roberts: Fishing for trout was good using Peacock Lady flies.

Percha Dam: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Quemado Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Rancho Grande Ponds: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Rio Grande: Stream flow below Elephant Butte Monday morning was 2,220 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.

Trees Lake: Fishing for trout was good using rainbow PowerBait, green PowerBait, peach PowerBait and spinners.

Young Pond: Fishing for trout was fair to good using garlic peach PowerBait, corn and marshmallows.

Bonito Lake: The lake is closed until further notice by the city of Alamogordo due to fire damage. It appears now that the lake will be out of commission until 2022.
