For someone who is only 24 years old, it was a special season for West Las Vegas girls head basketball coach. Not only was she named District 2-3A Coach of the Year, but had the co Player of the Year in 5-foot-2 junior guard Brianna Marquez.
“It’s a real honor,” said Martinez, “but I’m still learning. It was a great experience this season to coach these girls. They played hard, had outstanding attitudes and because of them I am blessed with this award.”
Marquez, who played point guard/shooting guard, shared the honor with Robertson senior Tessa Ortiz, who returned after an injury to lead the defending state champions Cardinals to the state tournament after a dismal start.
St. Michael’s had problems containing Marquez and didn’t do well against the Dons, but the Lady Horsemen did get their top two players, senior wing Carisa Padilla and freshman guard Lauryn Pecos, on the all-district team.
Santa Fe Indian School also put two players on with 5-foot senior point guard Hunter Garcia and 5-6 sophomore guard Jordan Torres.
From Raton there was 5-4 junior guard Anna Acosta.
From WLV, 5-7 senior forward Skylin Morgan, senior point guard Cameron Sandoval, junior forward Kaitlin Gonzales, and 5-6 junior guard Jennifer Sanchez joining Marquez and their head coach.
From Robertson, making the all-district team were 5-1 sophomore guard Gabi Trujillo, 5-9 sophomore forward Jayden Jenkins, and 5-5 sophomore guard Trinity Sena  joining Ortiz.
St. Michael’s get some help for its varsity after its freshmen team went 15-5 overall and 6-2 in district. Its junior varsity won seven of 13 overall and were 0-2 in district play. Jason Sanchez coached the JV and Jason Mossmen the freshmen.
Indian School won one of four JV games and were 0-2 in district. Its freshmen team was 3-1 and 2-0.
Santa Fe Prep, which has had trouble in numbers when it comes to putting together a varsity roster, had eight on this year’s under head coach Anika Amon. As for the junior varsity, it 0-2 and the freshmen 0-1. The Griffins usually have to deal with the school’s cross country, swimming and volleyball teams.
