Not time yet to get overconfident

By Arnie Leshin
Not time yet to get overconfident, overexcited, and looking to the new post-season look. If you are, you’d best first check out your team’s early look, because after the opening 3-4-game weekend of the restored 60-game regular-season, there’s not an undefeated club. Everybody is either 2-1 or 1-2.
Is it surprising? Maybe, maybe not, but for those that talked about needing a quick start and maintaining it, there’s still plenty of time to accomplish this.
At 2-1 are the New York Yankees after winning 2-of-3 in Washington, D.C. over the reigning World Series champion, same with the Miami Marlins taking 2-of-3 in Philadelphia, the Detroit Tigers doing the same in Cincinnati, the Baltimore Orioles coming away with 2-of-3 in Boston, the Minnesota Twins routing the Houston Astros, 14-2, on the road Sunday to win 2-of-3, the Colorado Rockies claiming 2-of-3 in St. Louis, and at the New York Mets, it was the Atlanta Braves losing the opener, 1-0, then romping 9-2 and 14-1 on the weekend.
There was the big win in the weekend finale for Minny and Atlanta, while the Marlins left the Phils with a 11-6 Sunday setback. One-run games were there, too, as Sunday got the Yanks past the Nats, 3-2, the Tigers nipped the Reds, 3=2, the Seattle Mariners left Houston with s 7-6 triumph.
Prior to the first pitch, the Dodgers and Yankees were installed preseason picks to reach the World Series. But the team from D.C. can’t be overlooked, nor can the Braves, St. Louis, Cincinnati and Milwaukee. As for the American League, Houston not going away, and the Tampa Bay Rays and White Sox could also challenge.
Weather conditions have been good both mornings, afternoons and nights. No fans in the standings, coronavirus restrictions also apply via social distancing, and face masks are also in the discussion. Several ballparks have brought some new looks with paid-for charitable cardboard cutups in the stands, some being placed in the lower stands and outfield after photos of these cutups were taken. plus, ball park technicians have pieced together sounds that follow a team doing something well, most coming loudest when they come from the home team.
Bad blow for the Astros Sunday when reigning Cy Young Award winner Justin Velander came up with a strained right forearm on Sunday, the day  after he went five innings to earn the win. Early reports disclosed that the right-hander might be missing a few starts, but Verlander himself said he expects a sooner return, and that maybe missing a good part of the season is not accurate..
The Marlins also reported that at least three of their players tested positive Saturday for COPID-19, and were flying back home from Boston Sunday where they will host the Orioles. Miami previously also noted the name of a few other players who have tested positive.
