|The Board of County Commissioners (BCC) will vote on a resolutionadopting the Santa Fe Food Policy Council (SFFPC) recommendations to support local food. The resolution will be presented to the full commission by Commission Chair Henry Roybal (D-1) and Commissioner Rudy Garcia (D-3), following staff presentations at the Tuesday, October 27, 2020 meeting.
The SFFPC, established in 2008, supports coordination efforts through the City, County, and non-profit organizations, promoting healthy and affordable food that improves public health. The sponsors of the resolution believe it is important to state the County’s commitment to supporting the SFFPC and local food in Santa Fe County, and is interested in how the council has had to adapt due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
“I am proud to represent legacy chile farmers and other traditional food producers in District 3. In times when food insecurity and drought threaten to our communities, we need to improve networks to support opportunities for our local farmers and ranchers,” said Commissioner Garcia.
Commissioner Roybal explained, “The Santa Fe Food Policy Council is hard at work to ensure that locally grown produce makes it to the tables of our youth, seniors, and constituents county wide. As a farmer, rancher, and commissioner I feel it is very important for us to support farmers and acequia grown food, it is the very foundation of sustainability.”
