Winter Road Conditions on the Santa Fe National Forest

Due to recent winter weather conditions, travel on forest roads may be difficult. Visitors are urged to use extreme caution, as snowstorms can happen unexpectedly causing the roads to be muddy and impassable.

If you are planning to visit the Santa Fe National Forest, please be prepared and remember to:

• Have a map of the area available.
• Check the weather forecast and road conditions. Be prepared for seasonal fluctuations.
• Use good judgment and basic safety precautions when hiking, fishing or camping on the Santa Fe National Forest.
• Let someone know your plans and when you expect to return.
• Carry items in your vehicle to use in an emergency:

o   A shovel, chains, water and food

o   Sand or kitty litter (for vehicles that may get stuck in the snow)

o   Jumper cables, flashlight and warning devices (i.e., flares, emergency markers, etc.)

o   Blankets for protection from the cold

Although the recent storm brought much-needed moisture to the forest, Stage 1 fire restrictions remain in place. Fires, campfires, charcoal grills, and coal and wood stoves are allowed only in Forest Service-built fire rings or grills provided for use at developed campgrounds and picnic areas.
