The Board of County Commissioners (BCC) will vote on a resolution in support of national companion resolutions, Senate Resolution 372, and U.S House Resolution 835, both setting a national goal of conserving at least 30 percent of land and ocean by 2030. The resolution will be presented to the full commission by Commissioner Anna Hansen (D-2) and Commissioner Hank Hughes (D-5), at the Tuesday, December 1, 2020, meeting for a vote.
The BCC has a record of adopting various resolutions in support of protecting Santa Fe County’s and our nation’s natural resources, and in recognizing the current climate crisis. This resolution, in addition to supporting the national efforts, also calls on County staff to include applicable parts of the Thirty by Thirty Resolution to Save Nature in the Sustainable Growth Management Plan or general strategic planning process.
“As the wildfires we experienced this summer sadly demonstrated, we are in the midst of a climate emergency. We know from climatologists that preserving natural areas on land and in the oceans is one crucial part of the necessary response to the climate crisis. This resolution supports efforts in Congress to preserve 30% of our land and 30% of the oceans in a natural state by 2030, and it provides a process for Santa Fe County to strengthen its efforts in preserving important natural areas in our County,” stated Commissioner Hughes.
Commissioner Hansen proclaimed, “It is my honor to support the Senate resolution introduced by U.S. Senator Tom Udall who has been a true champion of the environment for many decades, and the House resolution introduced by U.S. Representative Deb Haaland. It is with great respect for them and their efforts that I, along with Commissioner Hughes introduce this resolution to the Santa Fe County Board of County Commissioners for approval.”
The BCC meeting will be called to order at 2:00 p.m. and will progress through the agenda items in the order listed. Please read the agenda here. |
