The New Mexico Activities Association’s Board of Directors is doing its part to get the public high schools back in play

Via Zoom, the New Mexico Activities Association’s Board of Directors held a recent emergency meeting.

With the temporary basis due to the globe-wide COVID-19 pandemic, it sort to take action and provide an update on what lies ahead for New Mexico’s public high schools on the field of play. The Fall season had been put on hold and scratched football, volleyball and cross country. The same for the Winter season, and the Spring season has released every start and finish of each athletic program.

Hopefully, each and every sports will be played, with football kicking off initial practices on February 8th, and followed by volleyball and cross country. The rest will fill in from there.

As for the following items, they voted to take action pertaining to the addition of specific situations for eligibility granted to students for the Spring 2021 season who graduated in December.

Also voted in favor of a proposal to allow an eligibility exemption for students who transferred to schools out of state during 2020-2021 and then return to the same school in New Mexico for 2020-2021.

Also voted against a proposal regarding scholastic eligibility and the use of 6-week process reports.

Also voted to table approval of a modified sports calendar for the 2021 spring semester, with the Board fully supporting the return of sports activities on February 22nd, but time is needed to seek clarifications from the Public Education Department before adopting an official calendar.

Also voted to table modified contest limitations until and official calendar is adopted.

Executive Director Sally Marquis presented discussion items pertaining to the possible format for state football championships and out of season coaching regulations.

Another special NMAA Board of Directors meeting is scheduled for February 1st, 2021.

The next slated regular NMAA Board of Directors meeting is penciled in for February 17th, 2021.

No doubt, the main purpose is get to the teams on the field, as well as putting the students and teachers back in the classrooms, and only time will tell.
