BCC Proclaims April 22nd as Earth Day

By Santa Fe County

At the April 13, 2021 Board of County Commissioners (BCC) meeting, commissioners voted on a proclamationintroduced by Commissioner Anna Hansen (D-2). The proclamation recognizes April 22, 2021 as Earth Day.

The first Earth Day was celebrated on April 22, 1970, establishing an annual celebration highlighting the beauty of our planet and callings for participation across the globe to help sustain and protect our environment.

In celebration of Earth Day 2021, the County is sponsoring planting events for five Saturdays beginning April 17 through May 15. Drought tolerant pollinator plants and native trees will be planted in five locations throughout the County, one in each commission district. These will be COVID-safe events, complying with all of the Governor’s Public Health Orders, including wearing face coverings and maintaining social distancing while planting. Volunteers who wish to participate in the events can sign up in advance at Santa Fe County’s Earth Day page.

Locations included are:
District 1 – the Pojoaque Recreation Complex on April 17
District 2 – the Santa Fe River San Isidro Crossing on April 24
District 3 – the Hondo Fire Station on May 1
District 4 – the Edgewood Senior Center on May 8
District 5 – the Max Coll Community Center Eldorado on May 15

The resolution passed with a motion from Commissioner Hansen and a second by Commissioner Hank Hughes (D-5).
