Only one school in the land owns an unblemished record, and that’s 29-0 Oklahoma

By Arnie Leshin
The number one NCAA women’s Division I softball team is the only one in the land with an unblemished record, and that’s Oklahoma riding along at 29-0 after Saturday’s 10-0 zip at Louisiana Tech, the 15th shutout of the season for the soaring Sooners.
At No. 2 is reigning national champion UCLA (20-2), whose two losses have come to Pac12 foe, No. 3 Oregon and its junior southpaw pitcher Brooke Yanez. She turned back the Bruins 3-1 on the road back in February, and again this past Friday, 3-0, at home on a 2-hiiter to go with seven strikeouts over the seven innings. Her earned-run-average is currently 1:21, and her latest triumph snapped the Bruins’ 13-game win streak.
But Yanez, who is a California native, her undefeated record of 14-0 came to an end when she was on the short end of Saturday’s 3-0 setback to UCLA after the Bruins, on their home field, came up with three first inning runs.
No. 3 is Oregon, with the Ducks at 27-3.. Next comes Alabama (29-4),  followed by 26-4 Florida, Washington (28-4) is No. 6, at the next spot is 27-3 Texas, with No. 8 Arizona (22-5), No. 9 Florida State (24-6), and rounding out the top 10 is Arkansas at 31-3, and with the most wins in the country. The Razorbacks jumped from 13th with six-straight victories and into a tie with Kentucky (27-6).
As for Oklahoma, which is batting at a .437 clip and leads the nation in home runs and runs scored, it could have some tough Big 12 tests coming up when it soon plays host to Texas and then plays at state-rival, No. 12 Oklahoma State (29-5) in the final weekend before the conference tournament is played at the Hall of Fame Stadium in Oklahoma City, which is where the Elite Eight is played for the national title, and where UCLA defeated the Sooners in the year before the coronavirus pandemic shut down college sports.
Oklahoma also has back-to-back doubleheaders at No. 20 Georgia (23-6). As has been the case with other teams, the Sooners have had postponements and cancelations due to COVID-19. Patty Gasso is in her 25th season as their head coach.
The 2021 USA Today/NFCA Division I Top 25 Coaches Poll is voted on by 32 NCAA Division I head coaches with one representing each of the NCAA’s Division I conferences. Oklahoma picked up 800 points, 38 more than UCLA and 79 more than Oregon. Another team that up moved up was Virginia Tech (23-6) going from No.19 to No.15.
Oklahoma has won most of its games handily, with the close ones being 2-1 over Team Mexico, 2-1 over Arizona State, 5-4 over Liberty, and 9-7 over Iowa State. Arizona State (21-9) is ranked 13th. It has also won seven times via the mercy-rule, the biggest rout being 38-4 over New Mexico in only four innings. As for the close win over Arizona State, the Sooners won the other games of that series, 9-0, 4-0, and 6-1.
