Santa Fe High’s boys took care of business

By Arnie Leshin
There was no denying the Santa Fe High boys basketball team on their home court Saturday night.
Facing undefeated District 5-5A leading Los Lunas, the Demons made quick work of the visitors. And when senior guard Cody Garcia finished tossing in a pair of 3s to go with a steal and layup, Santa Fe High was already up 10-0 on the way to a 55-35 romp to move into the lead fin district and win its sixth game in eight overall starts, and to 5-1 in district.
Los Lunas, now 5-1 overall and 4-1 in district, was never in this one. It trailed 13-4 after one quarter and 32-15 at halftime. The second half was closer, but the Demons had already made a statement prior to their rematch at Los Lunas Wednesday night.
Garcia wound up with the team-high 11 points that included three 3s, while fellow senior guard Cruz Martinez tossed in 10 to go with a pair of 3s, and junior P.J. Lovato also scored 10. It was 39-24 after three quarters, and Santa Fe High also outscored the visitors, 14-11, in the final eight minutes. This result kept Capital High in the running for district honors as it plays now at the Demons after previously losing to them at home. The Jaguars also have a rematch with Los Lunas.
Jaiden Block also did his part in the scoring column for the home team with nine points, and teammate Lefio Banavidez turned in eight points.
The Pecos boys fell to 4-2 overall and 1-1 in district following Saturday’s 62-51 setback at Texico, which is now 4-2 overall and 1-1 in district 6-2A. The Panthers have a non-district contest Tuesday at Santa Fe Prep in a doubleheader that has the undefeated Pecos girls in the opener and the boys in the closer.
