St. Michael’s girls avenged an earlier loss at Raton by turning back the visiting Tigers Friday night, 48-35, in District 2-3A basketball.
The triumph kept St. Michael’s in the hunt for a state tournament berth with West Las Vegas and Robertson. The Lady Horsemen are now 3-3 overall and 2-2 in district. They led 7-6 after the first quarter and increased it to 22-11 at the intermission. Heading into the fourth quarter, the lead was 34-25, and then the home side outscored Raton, 14-11 over the last eight minutes.
The Tigers’ previous 37-32 win at home against St. Michael’s was their only one in district, where they are 1-8 and 1-10 overall. The Horsemen have a non-district game versus visiting Pojoaque Valley, then play West Las Vegas at the middle school court Wednesday, and wind up at Robertson Friday, with both being important tests/
In District 5-5A, Capital’s girls traveled to first place Los Lunas and returned with a 63-36 trouncing. The setback dropped the Jags overall record to 2-6 overall and 2-4 in district.
In 2-4A, Pojoaque Valley was dominated 56-24, at Moriarty to drop to 2-6 overall and1-4 in district, while the Pintos advanced to 6-2 overall.
In the 2-4A clash at Taos for the top spot, Espanola Valley won with ease, 68-27, to clinch first place and an automatic berth in the state tournament.
