ST. MICHAELS GIRLS BASKETBALL

By Arnie Leshin
With sophomore starting point guard Lauren Pecos on crutches with an ACL injury and on the girls soccer team bench watching and cheering on her teammates to Thursday afternoon‘s state championship, five others from the team showed no rest for the weary in arriving in time to play with the basketball team in the 42-29 night victory over visiting Albuquerque Sandia Prep.
Four of the soccer players were in the starting lineup as Pecos, the starter since 8th-grade, watched this, too, and is not expected back until December after suffering the injury in February.
So senior Rachel Morgan, who scored twice in the 4-1 win over Socorro at the University of New Mexico Soccer Complex, made it to the tipoff at the Perez-Shelley Memorial Gymnasium with the other four and turned in 17 points while junior Claire Patten, who scored in the soccer semifinals win over Sandia Prep, added nine points and brought down six rebounds.
Then there was junior Milena Keene, who had an outstanding match as goalkeeper on the pitch, contributed four rebounds in the team’s season-opener. The Lady Horsemen play next at home against West Las Vegas Monday night.
