St. Michael’s girls soccer team is top seed for the 1A/3A state tournament

St. Michael’s, the top seed in the 4-school state 1A-3A girls soccer tournament, plays host to Albuquerque Sandia Prep Tuesday afternoon in the 4 o’clock semifinals.
 
The Lady Horsemen won their District 2-3A at 4-0 and compiled a 6-0-1 overall record. They scored 38 times and allowed just one, a goal in their opener at Sandia Prep, which was a 2-1 win. The program has won state four times.
 
But the Sundevils have hoisted the championship trophy nine times, currently own a deceiving 3-4-1 record and are the 4th seed. They have scored 19 times and let in 12 goals. They have also played a difficult schedule versus 3th-seeded Socorro, 2nd-seeded Albuquerque Bosque School, and 4A Albuquerque Hope Christian.
 
Versus Socorro, they lost 1-0 in overtime and played a 1-1 two-overtime match. Against Bosque, they   
split two, losing 2-1 before winning 3-0 this past Saturday. They lost to Hope, 4-0. and In the match against the Lady Horsemen, they trailed 1-0 after one half and traded goals in the second half. Scoring in the game for St. Michael’s was freshman Elsa Ranney Smith and sophomore Farrah Baker, with two assists coming from senior Rachel Morgan. 
 
The Lady Horsemen have won state championships in 1997, 2001,  2007, and 2009, all under head coach Ed Veile. 
 
Bosque School is 7-2 overall, have tallied 26 times and have yielded 11 goals. The Bobcats won one state title, that coming in 2008. It lost its opener at 5A Rio Rancho, 3-0, edged Socorro, 3-2 twice, and nipped Santa Fe Prep, 3-1.  
 
Socorro has yet to win a championship on the pitch, is 6-3-1 overall and went 3-2-1 in District 1. It turned back Bosque, 3-2 in overtime and then lost 3-2 to the Bobcats. In a third match between the two, it resulted in a 1-1 tie played in two overtimes. It also won 5-4 in OT over 4A Los Alamos, which held St. Michael’s to a scoreless deadlock. There was also a 2-0 defeat against 5A Clovis.
 
“The girls are very excited about this,” said first-year head coach Alfonso Camarena. “It should be a good match, and it’s nice to have home field. But all four teams are good.”
 
And they all have their sights on advancing to Thursday’s finals played at the University of New Mexico Soccer Complex.
