The Horsemen have won their first two starts

By Arnie Leshin
In this shortened high school football season, you take whatever game is available, and so St. Michael’s will be playing at Raton Saturday afternoon in a game three days shy of the original date of March 6th, when the Horsemen were scheduled to visit the Tigers, but a coronavirus pandemic issue involving St. Michael’s cancelled the tilt.
But it became only postponed after the schools decided to play the game, and so the Horsemen will take a 2-0 record of blowouts at Taos, 48-3, and at home versus Espanola Valley, 60-6, to the 2-hour, 30-Menute drive up North I-25.  Raton is 2-1 with a 36-12 win at Estansia a triumph at home over Tucumcari, 44-0, and a 21-14 setback at Taos.
So the game is now rescheduled for 1 o’clock, it’s just a season-ending contest, and St. Michael’s is hoping to return undefeated. What it lacked last season was a supporting cast around junior quarterback Lucas Cortiz, and with one this time, it shows the vast improvement in the team, as well as the enthusiasm and strength on both sides of the ball.
In another Saturday afternoon contest, Capital (1-1) will play host to Piedra Vista with a scheduled 3 o’clock kickoff, and with the Panthers splitting four games on a rollercoaster ride. They opened at home and overwhelmed Miyamura, 42-0, then lost 14-0 at Bloomfield, shut down Aztec, 43-0 at home, and was routed 55-0
at Farmington.
Capital is 2-1 and all three games have been played home. The Jaguars first clobbered Los Alamos, 55-7, did the same to Pojoaque Valley, 59-6, and then fell to Los Lunas, 44-7.
The abbreviated season has ended for Santa Fe High.
