Two years after winning their initial state basketball championships and then fading down the stretch last season, the Pecos girls are no doubt sending a message or even better, making a statement.
Yesterday’s 71-14 District 6-2A trouncing over Santa Rosa on the road kept their unblemished record in tact, and it reads undefeated at 5-0. Not only that, but these Panthers also won a non-district test at 3A Robertson.
This was no contest from the outset as the Lions quickly fell to 3-2. Pecos bolted away to a 25-7 lead after one quarter, increased it to 44-10 at halftime, kept the home team off the scoreboard in the third quarter and upped the runaway score to 64-10 heading into the fourth quarter, with the mercy-rule in play and the clock continuing to roll for an earlier exit.
On Saturday, the red-hot Panthers head for district rival Texico in the 3 p.m. opener of a doubleheader that closes with the boys game pairing Pecos versus Texico. Also on Saturday, the St. Michael’s girls travel to Taos for a 7 p.m. contest, and Pojoaque Valley is at Espanola Valley in a 5:30 slated start.
At Santa Fe Prep, the Griffin girls won for the first time in three starts by getting past Monte del Sol, 25-21, and dropping the Dragons to 1-4.
It was 6-2 Monte del Sol after one quarter, it lead 9-8 at the intermission, 18-16 after three quarters, but the home side took charge in the final quarter with a 9-3 run that brought the comeback triumph. The Dragons were led by 13 points from junior Daisy Ortiz.
