Heron Lake State Park boat ramps re-open

By Arnie Leshin

The Energy, Minerals and Natural Resources Department, State Parks Division announces that Heron Lake, New Mexico’s premier no wake lake, has opened two boat ramps due to rising lake levels.  Superintendent David Ford stated that boat ramps located at Sierra Vista and La Laja are ready for the boating public.

Heron Lake staff welcomes all paddle craft, sail craft, pontoon boats and fishing boats to the lake.  Trailered vessels can launch from the concrete ramps while non-trailered vessels and other craft can utilize the ramps or shoreline to access the lake.

Fishing for Heron’s legendary Lake Trout as well as Rainbow Trout and Kokanee Salmon can be done from shore or from a vessel.  Common tactics utilized are worms, power bait, salmon eggs, or cut bait.  Trolling and jigging from a vessel can produce catches of all species.

Heron Lake State Park also offers access to the Quality Waters of the Rio Chama River for fly fishing enthusiasts.  Access can be gained at the Rio Chama Trailhead Day Use Area or the North El Vado Day Use Area.

Heron Lake is located 2 hours north of Santa Fe on State Road 95.  Camping by reservation, first come/first serve and primitive camping is available at multiple campgrounds.  Sixty water and electric sites are located in Willow and Blanco camping loops.  Day use fees are $5.00 and annual passes are available at the Visitor Center.  Ice and firewood are offered for sale at the park with proceeds going to Friends of Heron & El Vado.
