Friday should be a busy day for Pojoaque Valley’s Quintana sisters at the state 4A track and field championships.
It’s a limited amount of qualifiers for the Elkettes, but Alicia, a senior, and Sonya, a sophomore, have qualified for the 100 and 200 meters, while Alicia is also in the 400 for the one-day meet followed by Saturday’s 5A championships, both at the University of New Mexico’s complex.
Alicia has the best shot at stepping onto the podium. She has the second fastest time of 1:01.69 in the 400. In the 100, her best time of 13 seconds is among the first four, and in the 200 she has a 27:33 best clocking that puts her among the first six.
As for the younger Sonya, she has dashed 13.17 in the 100 and 27.60 in the 200. They will both run legs for the 4 x 100 relay team that qualified, while Espanola Valley’s girls have qualified for the 4 x 800.
Then there’s Pojoaque senior Hennessei Calabaza. She has qualified for the shot put, the discus and the javelin. Her best chance to wear a medal could be in the shot put where her best throw of 34-08 is among the top four. In the discus, her leading throw has been 96-04 and that has her at seventh best. Also in the disc is senior teammate Maya Archuleta.
In the boys events, the Elks have qualified for the 4 x 100 and 4 x 800 relays, while sophomore Adam Pacheco will heave the javelin where his best has him among the leading seven.
