The 2-day 2-1 St. Michael’s win over Robertson for the District 2-3A title was celebrated until Tuesday afternoon‘s re-match between the 6th-seeded Cardinals and 3rd-seeded Horsemen at the Christian Brothers Athletic Complex.
This time, it was a 11-7 victory by the visitors to close the season down for St. Michael’s and keep its rivals in the state tournament’s semifinals against 2nd-seeded East Mountain at Sandia Park Thursday.
The Timberwoles advanced by rolling past visiting 7th-seeded Navajo Prep Tuesday. The other side of the bracket had top-seeded Albuquerque Sandia Prep dispose of 8th-seeded Socorro and No. 5 New Mexico Military Institute hit the road to No. 4 Cobre and left with the victory.
The state championship game of the single-elimination will be Friday at Santa Ana Field in Albuquerque.
The Horsemen led 5-3 heading into the final inning, but defending champion Robertson pounced on their pitchers with eight runs to offset the last two tallied by St. Michael’s, which left 10 runners aboard, made costly mistakes and missed chances.
With three more outs that would end their season and their six-game playoff win streak. The Cardinals had cut the gap to 5-4 before following with seven more runs against three Horsemen hurlers.
That and the missed opportunities signaled the one and out for the home side.
