St. Michael’s softball takes two at Espanola McCurdy, 10-0 and 17-2, and both were run-rule games

St. Michael’s put an abrupt end to its softball team’s 5-game losing streak by sweeping the non-district game at Espanola McCurdy, 10-0 and 17-2, to up its overall record to 9-8.
In the opener that went five innings, junior right hander Mariah Valdez hurled a no-hitter while striking out 13 and walking four. She also contributed two hits, drove in a run and scored twice.
Senior Cassie Grandel added a trio of hits and an scored two runs, while senor Athena Archuleta, the second-game pitcher of what was called after three innings via the run rule, doubled to drive home two runs.
In the closer, Archuleta struck out four, walked one and allowed three runs. She was helped along by senior Rachel Morgan coming up with two hits, scoring two runs, and driving in one. Junior Isabella Lopez knocked home a run, as did freshman Mia Duran and 8th-grader Emily Montoya.
Then there was Archuleta herself with two safeties, two runs, and a pair of RBI, while Ariana Rivera batted in two runs.
The next stop for the Lady Horsemen is on the road at District 2-3A rival Raton Friday. In the previous doubleheader against the Tigers in Santa Fe, St. Michael’s won both games 21-6 and 7-4. As for McCurdy, it dropped to 4-7 overall.
