STATE BASEBALL & SOFTBALL TO0URNAMENTS — ST. MICHAEL’S-ROBERTSON

By Arnie Leshin
Well, Caleb Marrujo got his wish. It won’t be for the state baseball championship, but if the Robertson senior wanted a rematch of the 2-1 loss to St. Michael’s that decided the District 2-3A title, he’s got it.
It will be played Tuesday at 11 a.m. at the Christian Brothers Athletic Complex, with the 3rd-seeded Horsemen (12-6) again meeting up with the rival, 6th-seeded Cardinals (11-7), with the winner advancing to Wednesday’s semifinals played again at the higher seed. Friday is the championship at Santa Ana Field in Albuquerque.
Unfortunately, the New Mexico Activities Association doesn’t go for head-to-head contests, if it did St. Michael’s, which defeated top-seeded Albuquerque Sandia Prep, 3-2, would probably be the 2 seed behind the now 2nd-seeded East Mountain, that the Horsemen lost to, 11-10.
Instead, the district foes will meet again. They split a doubleheader at the Cardinals’ field and St. Michael’s then won the weather delayed 2-1 game for the district title.
Playing again at home is a good sign for the Horsemen. They are 8-2 there.
The Lady Horsemen (11-8) also qualified for the state softball tournament, but they will have to fit the underdog role after already being beaten three times by the undefeated (16-0) Cardinals. This contest will be played Monday with 4 p.m. the scheduled first pitch.
St. Michael’s got the 7th seed, and for some reason, Robertson was given the 2nd-seed. In their previous games versus their district rivals, the Cardinals handily won a doubleheader, 7-1 and 10-1, at home and then added a 12-0 shutout in Santa Fe.
Dexter, which won twice over junior varsities, was otherwise 16-0, and is the No. 1 seed, and will play today against visiting 8th-seeded Socorro.
The Lady Horsemen are no doubt grateful for landing in the final eight, but they no doubt have their work cut out for them.
