The Cleveland Major League Baseball team has finally come up with a new nickname

By Arnie Leshin
The “Guardians,” that’s it, whether you like it or not, get used to the Cleveland Indians’ new name.
The franchise will still be using its long-time moniker through the 2021 season. As for the Guardians, it is inspired by the “Guardians of Traffic” sculptures on the city’s Hope Memorial Bridge. Oh, and they are visible in the introduction to the famed movie “Major League.”
The club has held its name since 1915, but it was also known to offend Native American groups and others. The move came shortly after the Washington Football Team dropped its longtime, often referred to as a racial nickname “Redskins.”
Cleveland’s name change had mostly followed in the footsteps of the National Football League’s own long-awaited swap, aside from the city’s decision to keep using the offensive name instead of a temporary replacement.
Meanwhile, Washington earlier this month said that it would unveil its new name and logo in early 2022. Like Cleveland, Washington has been sorting through potential nicknames since announcing its plans, with no shortage of candidates and reportedly nearly 1,200 options.
Headdresses and its face paint at the Cleveland’s Progressive Field will remain this season, but it dropped the racist-referred Chief Wazoo tag and will still use its present logo as official merchandise this season.
But it is and will always be the tribe. Long-time fans of what is also known as “Rock & Roll City,” always spoke of the Indians as their family. But those that never liked that moniker are no doubt happy that it is being replaced after hundreds of years of history.
Cleveland returns to the world of irrelevance, but not everyone will accept this new nickname. Who knows, native Americans might or might not. The Indians, by the way, were named in honor of a minor league native american baseball player from way, way back. And most of them even prefer to be known as Indians or American Indians, not native Americans.
Cleveland announced the impeding name change with a video on Thursday.
