They’re playing with a different script, but it’s still being a fun Little League Major Baseball World Series

By Arnie Leshin
Not a lot of blasts going over the fences, but they are no doubt having a ball at this year’s pieced together Little League Baseball World Series that does not include International foreign teams, limited attendance in the stadium seats and the grass hills beyond the outfield, but allows the skies to empty.
The bottom line, they’re playing ball in the world’s biggest, best and longest youth sports program, and it was just another fun day, the rain let up to get two of the four games completed, the Los Angeles Angels and Cleveland Indians made the scene, entertained the people, and played an official Major League game.
Now starting with the four games scheduled for Sunday at Howard B. Lamarde Stadium in South Williamsport, Pa, the rain fell early and delayed the first two games, except that one was postponed and the other went seven innings after a 2-hour delay.
That was Honolulu Hawaii over Hastings Nebraska, 13-3, and why did it go seven innings, one over the regular format? Well, Hawaii had pounded out twice as many hits as Nebraska, but led only 3-0 heading into the bottom of the sixth. What happened than was Nebraska, champion of the Midwest Region, finally got a base hit when Hurte Neble did even better as he clouted a 3-run homer over the fence in left to bring a 3-3 tie.
That meant there was going to be a seventh inning and Hawaii had no problem building a big one, pushing across 10 runs to reel in plenty of insurance, Nebraska did not tally in the last of the seventh and dropped to 1-1.
Then there was the other game waiting for the last drops to fall, and when they did, Southern California, the West Region second place team, just rolled over Hamilton Ohio, the Great Lakes runner-up, 9-0. It was scoreless until Southern Cal’s Grant Hays hit his first of two home runs, a 2-run blast to right-center field in the bottom of the third. In the fifth, his 3-run shot made it 5-0 when it sailed over the fence in right.
The boys from Cal added four more runs and Ohio’s record fell to 1-2, and it was ousted following a 1-0 zip over Noelenville Tennessee.
As for the two scheduled games moving over the Monday schedule, weather permitting, it’s Oregon’s Northwest Region runner-up, taking on South Dakota’s second place team from the Midwest Region at 1 p.m. Mountain Time, and at 3 Mountain Time, it would be Taylor Michigan, the Great Lakes Region winner, meeting up with Texas West’s Southwest Region champion.
Time for some “rain, rain, go away, come back another day when the LL Major World Series is done.”
So after all this, there was still another baseball game to be played, and it wasn’t Lamarde Stadium, it was at historic downtown Bowman Field as the teams piled into their seats and the California Angels took the field against the Cleveland Indians in the fourth annual Little League Classic matching Major League teams.
It rained some, but unless there was a major storm or hurricane, they weren’t going to take the game away from the kids, and so after getting autographs, photos and doing some hand-shaking with the players, it ended with Cleveland carting off a 3-0 win and making the 10-12 age youngsters happy for this and the other fun that went into it.
The two rescheduled games paired four teams from the winner’s bracket, Oregon-South Dakota and Michigan-Texas West. Hawaii and Southern California are also unbeaten, New Jersey, New Hampshire, Nebraska and Louisiana are  all 1-1. and eliminated are Tennessee, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Florida, Ohio and Washington.
There was no LL World Series last year because of coronavieus pandemic protocol issues, so the last champion was River Edge Louisiana, which lost this time to Louisiana-Lafayette in the Southwest Region finals. This time, the champion will again come from the United States.
Wonder if the Little League kids know “Take me out to the Ballgame.”?
