Big start by visiting non-district opponent Belen and slow start by Capital

By Arnie Leshin
Too little, too late for the Capital High football team Friday night.
Now 2-3 under new head coach Joaquin (Wax) Garcia, the Jaguars welcomed non-district opponent Belen (3-2) to Jaguar Field and then had to overcome a huge deficit when it tallied 16 points in the last 2 and one-half minutes, but it was difficult to bounce back from being down by 20 points at halftime.
With only three seniors on this young and inexperienced 5A team, the Eagles took charge only three plays after the kickoff, kicked the PAT, and then followed with a trip into the end zone, and the point-after put them up 14-0 after one quarter.
Meanwhile, Capital went the first half on homecoming night without completing a pass. And Garcia was satisfied with the team finally scoring late, but not happy with how it hung around while Belen was moving its offense with a mixture of run-and-gun.
“For me,” Garcia said, “I guess it’s easy because I’m such an intense son, and sometimes I just have to try to understand how I can bring it out of them, and at the end of the day, they’ve got find it in themselves.”
Jags’ junior quarterback Julian Munoz responded but his side was now down by 33 points after trailing 34-14 at the intermission. He completed six of his passes late in the game, with two going for touchdowns to Javier Martinez. As a team, Capital had only 53 yards on the ground and 132 total offense, with 84 coming on the final two drives.
The next stop for the Jaguars is Friday night at Albuquerque Rio Grande, and is their final non-district tilt before opening District 5-5A at home versus Piedra VIsta.
