ST. MICHAEL’S AT ROBERTSON SOCCER

By Arnie Leshin
You can’t go undefeated all the time and win the state 3A girls soccer championship.
Which is what St. Michael’s did last year in the shortened COVID-19 season under new head coach               Now after hitting the road Friday and shutting down District 2-3A rival Robertson, the Lady Horsemen are 6-2 overall.
“Our defense is playing better and better each game and the chemistry from last season is coming back after losing four of our leading players,” said
It was yet another shutout, 2-0, for St.Michael’s, its fourth. The two loses came in the 4-0 opener against 5A Santa Fe High and at Scoorro,1-0.
The setback versus the Demonettes was just a tough task when you face one of the bigger opponents, and the defeat versus the Warriors could be called avenging last season’s 4-2 loss in the state championship game at the University of New Mexico complex, and especially since it was played this time at Socorro.
After a scoreless first half, the Lady Horsemen scored both goals in the second half, and both came from junior Grace Sandoval, who has now played all seven matches and with 465 minutes. These were her third goals and she also leads the team in assists with nine.
The assists came from sophomores Tara Schneider and Elsa Ronney Smith. Schneider now has five assists and has played 440 minutes, while Smith now has three assists to go with three goals and a team-leading 16 points. Sophomore Logan Hunt has put in 470 minutes.
Senior goalkeeper Milena Keene, who also kicks the extra points and field goals for the Horsemen boys football team, has played most of the minutes (450) in the goal and has allowed only a pair of goals.
St. Michael’s has also defeated Albuquerque Bosque School, 6-0, Monte del Sol, 10-0, Taos, 3-1, and Capital, 10-0. It has scored 31 times and yielded six.
It has upcoming matches home and away against district foes Santa Fe Indian School, West Las Vegas, home and away versus Santa Fe Prep, home to visiting Aztec, and also home and away against to West Las Vegas.
