St. Michael’s loses 2-1 Wednesday in girls soccer

By Arnie Leshin
After getting blanked 4-0 against Los Alamos in last girls soccer season at non-district opponent, St. Michael’s did get to score this time, but drooped a tight 2-1 loss to the visiting Hilltoppers Wednesday afternoon at the Christian Brothers Athletic Complex.
The setback put the 3A Lady Horsemen at 5-3 overall and 4A Los Alamos improved to 4-1-1. Each team scored once in the first half, with the Hilltoppers’ goal coming from junior Tara McDonald, who had taken seven shots in the match versus the reigning state 3A champions.
The tie was broken in the second half on a Los Alamos goal from freshman Laila Carter, who also took seven shots at goal. St. Michael’s had won its last three starts, all shutouts, and have now tallied 32 goals and have allowed eight.
Senior Dalia Draw and sophomore Mika Stanfield shared the goalkeeping for the visitors, with each playing a half and Stanfield making 12 saves and Draw three.
