The next game for St. Michael’s is on Saturday afternoon Sept. 25

By Arnie Leshin
St. Michael’s hit the road for Los Alamos Fridiay night, searched for another quarterback after four-year starter Lucas Coriz became sidelined for the season with a knee injury that required surgery, and returned with a 21-7 non-district victory.
It was the third Horsemen win in four starts, but was also a merry-go-round of quarterbacks as head coach Joey Fernandez tried to find another quarterback to mix a passing game with the balanced rushing attack.
The end result was not all that successful as the team heads into a bye weekend in which practice will be devoted to bringing a sense of stability to the offense.
Against the Hilltoppers, St. Michael’s came away with a trio of 75-yard touchdown drives to to pave the way for 39 of 53 snaps to run the ball. Sophomore Jacob Katko was the first to line up at the quarterback position, but he was replaced after the first drive by senior Devin Flores, whose initial snap was out of the wildcat formation.
The first half also saw senior Issac Ruiz and junior Marcus Leyba take turns there, and it then became a rotation with Flores and Leyba. The Horsemen led 14-0 at halftime, and after Los Alamos (2-2) scored late in the fourth quarter to trim the gap to 14-6, but St. Michael’s responded with an 80-yard touchdown drive to account for the final score.
After the bye weekend, the Horsemen are home to non-district opponent Socorro, with the unbeaten Warriors at 4-0 after routing Albuquerque Hope Christian, 35-3, Friday night.
