HIGH SCHOOL CROSS COUNTRY — LOS ALAMOS INVITATIONAL

Rio Rancho Cleveland junior Leah Futey, in quest of her fourth state 5A cross country championship, took on a tough girls field in the 5,000 meters and left it behind in 19:13.10 at Saturday morning‘s Los Alamos Invitational, as she and runner-up Hilltopper Delaney Ultrich were the only ones to race 19 minutes.
In the boys varsity run, it was a one-two-three finish for host Los Alamos as senior Keith Bridge ran 16:31.30 to nip teammate Morgan Schaller by 2.2 seconds, and in third came Ryan Aldaz in 16:56.25.
Ninth place went to Santa Fe High senior Tanner Black in 17:43.51, and in 13th was Pecos’ Elijah Lujan in 18:14.92. The top Academy of Technology and The Classics harrier was 28th place Joey Gurule in 19:23.53.
In the team scoring, the Hilltoppers won it handily with 21 points and took the first three places as well as 7th, 8th, and 17th and 20th, respectively for its No. 6 and 7 harriers. Second was Cleveland with 56, Pecos ran fourth with 115, Santa Fe High was next with 141, and ATC scored 253 for 10th place. There was a field of 63 and 10 schools.
In the junior varsity, the girls race was won by Los Alamos’ Zorah Fuller and she was timed in 22:00.49, with teammate Rebecca Beaux second in 22:02.06. The team scoring was title with as Cleveland tallied 24 and Los Alamos 31. Before that the host school was up 2-0 via the varsity races.
Just a preparation for the upcoming districts and state championships, with the latter to be run on Nov. 6 at Albuquerque Academy. States will again be raced in one day same as it was at Rio Rancho High and before it at Gallup.
In the junior varsity, the girls race was won by Los Alamos’ Zorah Fuller, and she was timed in 22:00.49, with teammate Rebecca Beaux second in 22:02.06. The team scoring was tight as Cleveland tallied 24 and Los Alamos
31. Before that the host team was 2-0 in the varsity races.
But the host JV boys rounded it out by finishing on top with no problem, and by running 1-2-6-9-10-11-17 to total 28. The winner was Gilden Dawes of Cleveland and he was timed at 18:10.05. Right behind was teammate Vince Madalena and he finished in 18:12.22.
