By Arnie Leshin
The beat goes on.
Almost everybody contributed when the reigning state 3A girls soccer champions from St. Michael’s shut down visiting Santa Fe Indian School, 10-0, Wednesday afternoon for the second straight time in a District 2-3A match.
Now 11-4 overall and 5-0 in district, the Lady Horsemen next play at district foe West Las Vegas this afternoon. In a previous meeting at home, St. Michael’s downed the Dons, 10-0, and the fourth win this current streak came over Santa Fe Prep, 5-1, for 35 points scored and only one allowed.
Similar to last season when the young team went undefeated and crowned champions in the pandemic-shortened campaign, this is still a young team and of the eight different scorers and those who came up with assists, none were seniors.
Sophomore Elsa Ranney Smith added to her 17 goals with another pair this time and the same number of assists. Mariza Dominguez, an 8th-grader, tallied twice. Sophomores Tara Schneider and Jada Lujan scored a goal each, as did juniors Farrah Baker and Gabby Farrah, freshman Eliana Lovato also tallied once, and junior Grace Sandoval contributed a goal and two assists.
Ranney Smith leads the team in scoring, just ahead of Sandoval. Ranney Smith has also taken the most shots, 36, with 17 on goal. Juniors Logan Hunt and Farrah, Sandoval and sophomore Cameren Gantt have played more than 900 minutes thus far.
As a team, it has scored 76 times and given up only a dozen. The Lady Horsemen are 5-2 at home and 6-2 on the road.
After the match in West Las Vegas, head coach Alfonso Camarena’s girls are home to Santa Fe Prep on Oct. 20, and Robertson visits on Oct. 22.
