Raton, which had won its first dozen games and was the top seed in the 3A state playoffs before losing to St. Michael’s in the class semifinals, came away with 10 players on top the District 2 all-team, as well as coach of the year, player of the year, and defensive player of the year.
Robertson, which went 11-2, and turned back visiting St. Michael’s, 28-7, to earn its fourth state championship, put eight on the team, the Horsemen (9-4) had seven, and Santa Fe Indian School (5-5) had five under new head coach Bill Moon.
The key to the Cardinals run was senior quarterback Matthew Gonzales and he was named player of the year. The Tigers had the rest with district player of the year in versatile junior Cayden Walton, defensive player of the year in senior Matt Quartieri, and coach of the year Tony Giacomo.
