NM HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL ACTION

By Arnie Leshin
Fortunately for the St. Michael’s boys basketball team it played Monday, but for the girls it is a back-to-back situation in the District 2-3A tournament.
Same with Capital’s boys and girls in 5-5A. By ousting Albuquerque Manzano Tuesday night, they both remained in play but will have to take the court again on Wednesday in the semifinals.
The Jaguars boys got past the Monarchs on the road, 70-68, with Isaiah Ortega’s breakaway layup with four seconds remaining bringing the win and putting Capital at 12-15 overall when it plays tonight at first place Los Lunas in the district semifinals, the Tigers getting there by defeating Santa Fe High twice.
For the Jaguars, senior Anthony Alvez had the team-high 18 points despite playing down the stretch with four personal fouls. It was a breakaway layup by Isiah Ortega with four seconds remaining that brought the win for Capital.
The girls (8-19) are also in play after turning back visiting Monzano, 37-27, and setting up Wednesday’s semis date at Albuquerque High. The Jaguars were on top 26-12 at halftime and their defense held the visitors to only 15 second half points. It was Annalise Leos having the game-high 18 points for the home side.
Also in 5-5A, it will be Santa Fe High playing host to the current highest seeds in a doubleheader, the Demonettes (17-8) in the 5:30 opener against Leos Lunas and the Demons (21-4) in the scheduled 7 o’clock closer versus Albuquerque High.
As for St. Michael’s, the Horsemen earned tonight’s quarterfinals test with a visit from West Las Vegas, who they disposed of 63-43 on Monday to determine the seeding, with Raton No. 2 and St.Michael’s No. 3 on a points differential tiebreaker. From 0-10, the Horsemen are now 10-13.
Now the Lady Horsemen also remain in business following Tuesday’s 42-26 elimination of visiting Raton, and are 9-17 overall as they hit the road for West Las Vegas tonight in the quarterfinals The one-two punch of juniors Lauryn Pecos and Carmen Pacheco combined for 27 points, one more than the Tigers.
