By Arnie Leshin
Just so you know that it’s ladies first when New Mexico unveiled its 2022 state basketball tournament schedule
announced by the New Mexico Activities Association.
Friday is the opening night, first round, and it’s the girls taking the floor. They play again Tuesday, on Thursday, and on Saturday, and whoever gets that far will be hoisting the familiar blue championship trophy.
Same with the boys, except they play again on Wednesday, and on Friday, but also on championship Saturday.
All these first round games will be played at the higher seeds.
Pecos’ girls own a pair of state titles, the most recent was highlighted by an undefeated season, the first ever for the program. But this campaign had them barely over .500, seeded 14th, and playing at 3rd-seeeded Eunice, which is 18-5.
In 3A, a number of the schools are fortunate to have 16 teams in the field, with St. Michael’s and Santa Fe Indian School joining District 2-3A rivals Robertson, West Las Vegas and Raton. The Cardinals (24-1) are the No.1 seed, the Braves (18-6) are No. 3, the Dons (9-14) are No. 11, and the Lady Horsemen (10-18) are at No. 13.
Robertson is home to district foe, No. 16 Raton (11-16), Indian School welcomes Albuquerque Sandia Prep (11-14), West Las Vegas is at Socorro (17-6), and St. Michael’s travels to 20-6 Navajo Prep.
In 4A,  the opening round has three District 2 schools in the field, one of them matching No. 6 Taos (21-6) playing host to No. 11 Espanola (12-14), an the other sending 13th-seedeed Los Alamos to 4th-seeded Portales.
In 5A, Santa Fe High (18-9) made the field as the District runner-up, but wasn’t overjoyed to be the16th-seed, and have to play at unbeaten Volcano Vista (25-0), which has won 38 in a row.
